Thank you. This helps me think about how to approach writing about the suffering we see in the newborn ICU. Very different from death row, but no shortage of death or of spiritual lessons worth attending to.
This is so beautiful and hopeful. It strikes me there is a growing community of people who “agree with” Elizabeth Bruenig philosophically, morally and spiritually. Hopefully this is a growing faction of partisans!
It's true: most left-wing activists and journalists (to speak redundantly) omit any mention of the actual crimes that imprisoned criminals commit, part of the larger left-wing project of lying about reality and misleading their readers.
So I am grateful to Elizabeth Bruenig for her basic honesty, a quality which is otherwise lacking in the left-wing media-activist complex.
I really wanted to read more about Elizabeth's imperative, impetus, practices to anchor and persevere in this hard vocation. And to also understand mroe of what she meant by Christian left. It might hv been better to get her to write a piece on personal reflection. Thank you for this!
Oh, I loved this one. Both of you were eloquent and really conveyed something that had been bothering me for a while.
Recently, I was on a national excursion through several parts of Ethiopia, which may have left me a little more cynical than I was (especially as someone in the nonprofit field). And while my work doesn't put me in intense situations like Elizabeth, I don't think I would be doing what I'm doing if it weren't for Jesus. It would just be too much.
Thank you for this interview and for being kind witnesses to the human experience

She did recently write a reflection that she gave as a lecture at the University of Chicago! I thought it was beautiful:
